July 2, 2010
The fourth of July falls on a Sunday this year, allowing many to enjoy a long weekend in the sun, water, and watching fireworks. The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago would like everyone to enjoy a safe summer holiday, and offers these special safety tips on heat, water, fireworks and outdoor cooking safety to help you and your loved ones have a great weekend:
Make sure everyone is safe around water:
·         Swim in areas supervised by a lifeguard
·         Be knowledgeable of the water environment you are in and its potential hazards, such as deep and shallow areas, currents, depth charges, obstructions and where the entry and exit points are located. The more informed you are, the more aware you will be of hazards and safe practices.

Beware of the heat:
  • Drink plenty of water or non-alcohol fluids. The easiest way to avoid heat-related illness is by drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and drink water even when you’re not thirsty.
  • Dress for summer by wearing light-colored, light-weight clothing to reflect heat and sunlight.
How to grill safely:
  • Make sure everyone, including the pets, stays away from the grill. Supervise your grilling.
  • Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire.
  • Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using grills.
    • To ensure a great 4th of July weekend, stay safe when you're flipping those burgers. Review safety tips at www.chicagoredcross.org
Enjoy the fireworks, but be careful:
  • Never give fireworks to small children, and always follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection.
  • Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud".
  • Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
    • Wear eye protection when lighting off those fireworks this 4th of July weekend! For more safety tips visit www.chicagoredcross.org
