Team Firestopper Program
In the Greater Chicago area, our Red Cross relief teams help disaster victims recover after home fires every single day. There are simple steps that everyone can take to protect their home and family from fire. Team Firestopper offers this information through a comprehensive program that focuses on the communities that are disproportionately affected by fires. This volunteer-led (register as a volunteer here) program provides education and hands-on community fire prevention activities. Participants in the in-home visits and safety fairs walk away with free smoke detectors, CO detectors, fire extinguishers, disaster preparedness kits and more to make their families safer.
Interested in being a participant? See when we will be in your community and complete an application: for in-home visits click here and for fire safety seminars click here. Send completed applications to makowskim@usa.redcross.org or mail to 2200 W. Harrison St. | Chicago, IL 60612.

Team Firestopper Volunteers
This year Team Firestopper will utilize over 500 volunteers! Volunteers are the driving force of this program. All training will be provided on-site by the Red Cross.

Roles Include:
-
Community Canvassing: Volunteers will go door-to-door and distribute brochures, door hangers, fact sheets and other materials to teach residents about essential home fire safety tips.
-
Home Fire Safety Visits Team Member: Visit residents directly in their homes to conduct a hazard hunt, safety makeover, and help families develop a disaster plan. Home visits are one of Team Firestopper’s most well-known services. You can register individually or as a three-person team(one person must train to be a Home Visit Leader; see role description below).
-
Home Fire Safety Visits Leader: Take charge and lead a team of two other volunteers on home safety visits. As a leader, you will guide teams to appointments and train your members on the day of the event.
-
Safety Fair Seminar Leader: Know a thing or two about safety in the home and fire prevention? Share your smarts as a seminar leader for a family-friendly fire prevention presentation. Bilingual volunteers are specifically needed.
-
Registration Volunteers: Check-in families, deliver surveys, and review safety fair-station cards, making sure families receive all of their materials at the end of the day. Spanish-speaking bilingual volunteers are needed for our Aurora, Waukegan and Joliet Team Firestopper events.
