  • RWTC volunteers receive free, specialized training in disaster response and don't have to make a long-term commitment.
  • Partner organizations make a valuable contribution to their communities and show their employees, customers and others that they care.

FAQS about Ready When the Time Comes

What types of functions will the volunteers be performing?
Volunteers from companies and organizations will be trained to perform one of the four disaster relief functions listed below:

Sheltering Volunteer
Help other volunteers set up the Red Cross shelters by:

  • Registering incoming disaster victims and offer comfort
  • Assembling cots
  • Distributing blankets
  • Establishing eating areas
  • Staffing casework interview booths
  • Helping with other necessary roles 

Mass Care Feeding Volunteer
Help with food acquisitions, prepare, pick up and deliver food to disaster sites and to Red Cross shelters.

Damage Assessment Volunteer
Work with a team to survey the disaster site for total damage estimates and determine how much Red Cross assistance is needed.  (In many cases, detailed assessments are necessary as volunteers move from house to house in order to report all damage caused by a disaster.)

Community Response Center Volunteer
CRC volunteers will respond to telephone inquiries from the public during or after a local, state, or national emergency, providing quality, timely, and accurate information to family and friends of disaster victims.

How long is the training?
The training is 4-6 hours at the corporate site and can take place days, evening and Saturdays.

How many participants are needed?
A minimum of 15 participants are required.

What is the commitment?
There is a commitment which is reviewed annually for the corporations, employees can continue as long as they are affiliated with the company.

Will the team be going out of state?
Deployments are for large-scale local disasters such as floods, sizeable apartment building fires, and individuals can volunteer to support the American National Red Cross on national disaster deployments, if they choose.
