CHICAGO-January 22, 2009-A day-long fundraising drive by the Chicago broadcasting and print media community, the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago and Hewitt Associates garnered $2,962,391 million in aid for the American Red Cross relief effort in Haiti. Funds from the CHICAGO HELPS HAITI relief drive will help provide shelter services, food and medical care to victims of the devastating earthquake. This number may increase in the coming weeks as mail in donations resulting from the relief drive are received and processed.
Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago provided relief at O’Hare International Airport to 166 Haiti evacuees, including 43 children and infants, who arrived on last night’s flight. Of the 166 evacuees, 148 required shelter, including the 43 children and infants.

They are expected to arrive at O’Hare International Airport on United flight 9902 at approximately 9:25 this evening. The Red Cross is providing the Haiti evacuees with food, medical care, hygiene kits provided by Walgreen’s, translation services, computers and phone access, support in reconnecting with loved ones, counseling and comfort at a receptions center in the city.
The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago opened a shelter last night for 24 people displaced by a fire in Rogers Park. The shelter is located at Loyola University at the Centennial Forum in the Bremner Lounge. The address is 1125 W. Loyola Ave. The shelter will close January 16 at noon.
The Chicago broadcasting and print media community is joining the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago and Hewitt Associates in a united effort to help those facing the devastating aftermath of the Haitian earthquake. The CHICAGO HELPS HAITI relief drive will take place Thursday, January 21st from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Television and radio stations throughout the Chicago area will air a blitz of public service announcements encouraging people to call 1-877-565-5000 starting at 5:00 a.m. on January 21st to contribute to the American Red Cross Haitian relief effort.

Our relief workers will arrive prepared to help disaster victims and their neighbors cope with this emergency. Red Cross volunteers are also preparing to support fire and police officials by providing food and drinks. The Red Cross responds to an average of three to four disasters every day in the Chicagoland area.
